COMBAT PATROL: South Pacific Supplement

This is a Supplement to Combat Patrol WWII. You need EITHER Set A, Set B, or the Starter Set to play this game.

The South Pacific add-on contained two sets of Action Decks for Japanese units operating in the South Pacific during WWII. It includes optional rules that enable players to better represent the unique conditions found in the South Pacific during WWII. These cards are mostly common with the cards in the other sets. The differences are in the bottom section of the cards for morale checks. These cards better represent the unique morale characteristics of Japanese forces in the jungles of the South Pacific

Combat Patrol is a unique card-based miniatures game. The unique Double Random Activation mechanism provides a leap-ahead method for activating units that provides the friction and drama of card-based systems with none of the drawbacks. Combat Patrol uses a card-based combat resolution mechanism that is exciting and simple while eliminating unsightly chart cards cluttering your beautiful gaming table.

BLOOD, BILGE AND IRON BALLS: A Tabletop Game of Naval Battles in the Age of Sail

Each player can easily command a single ship or several, the rules work for a single frigate chasing down a privateer, or a large-scale fleet action with multiple players on each side. The basic rules have been written with the emphasis on providing a fast-playing and fun game, but optional rules are included which will add a greater level of historical realism and detail. A card-driven turn sequence prevents the game becoming too predictable.

Also included are a selection of scenarios for re-fighting specific historical battles and simple campaign rules. Although intended for use with model ships, the rule book includes sheets of ship counters which can be used to get started. Just add dice, tape measure, and pencil and you’re ready to play.

THE ARMY OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC: From the Regal Period to the Army of Julius Caesar

Traces the development of the Roman Republic’s army from its foundation (having first set the context of their regal antecedents), down to the time of its most famous leader, Julius Caesar. The transition from clan-based forces, through the Servian levy, and the development of the manipular and cohortal legion is examined along with the associated weapons, tactics and operational capabilities. Discusses how the legions shaped up against the challenges of successive enemies from the Celts, Samnites, Carthaginians, and the hitherto-dominant Hellenistic armies based on the Macedonian-style pike phalanx.

CARTHAGE AT WAR: Punic Armies c. 814-146 BC

The Carthaginians are well known as Rome’s great enemy of the three Punic wars and Hannibal, their greatest general, is a household name. While narrative histories of the Punic wars (especially the second) and biographies of Hannibal abound, there have been few studies dedicated to detailed analysis of Carthaginian armies and warfare throughout the city-state’s entire existence. Provides a study of their tactics, equipment, unit organization, army composition, and operational effectiveness. Importantly, while the Second Punic War is rightly given prominence, this is not at the expense of the many earlier wars Carthage waged as she built and then defended her empire.

SIEGE WARFARE DURING THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR: Once More Unto the Breach

Concentrates on and analyzes the sieges that played a decisive role in the Hundred Years War between England and France. Edward III’s capture of Calais in 1347 was of crucial importance for the English, and the failure of the English siege of Orleans in 1429 was a turning point for the French after the disaster of Agincourt.

Describes the difficulties faced by besieger and besieged, examines the logistics and resource implications of sieges, and provides a comparative assessment of siege warfare alongside set-piece battles and the English strategy of chevauchees. Key sieges are reconstructed in vivid detail, other sieges are summarized, and the book is fully illustrated with photographs and plans.

BATTLES OF THE WARS OF THE ROSES

Starting with an overview of the Wars of the Roses’ politics and events that culminated in the war between the houses of Lancaster and York. This new history focuses on the 17 battles that took place around the country between 1455 and 1487. It considers the causes, course and result of each battle, beginning with the first battle of St Albans on 22 May 1455, which was won by the Yorkist faction lead by Richard, Duke of York.

The battle of Towton on 29 March 1461 was the bloodiest ever known on English soil and the victory there of the first Yorkist King Edward IV is described here in vivid detail. The battle of Tewkesbury on 4 May 1471 saw the death of Edward Prince of Wales, the last male heir of the Lancastrians, and the subsequent murder of King Henry VI at the Tower of London. The defeat and death of King Richard III at the battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485 marked the end of the Plantagenet dynasty. The last battle of the Wars of the Roses was at East Stoke on 16 June 1487 where the first Tudor King Henry VII crushed the Yorkist revolt.

The final chapter of the book is devoted to the mystery of the Princes in the Tower, who disappeared at the Tower of London during the reign of King Richard III in 1483, and the suspects to their likely murders. Written with the most up-to-date archaeological and documentary research, and including many images of the main protagonists, battle sites, maps and genealogical charts.

LEPANTO 1571: Christian and Muslim Fleets Battle for Control of the Mediterranean

Re-examines the Sunday, 7 October 1571 battle of Lepanto and concludes that, while it merely confirmed a strategic reality that had already emerged during the 16th century (i.e. that naval supremacy lay with the Sublime Porte in the eastern Mediterranean, and with Habsburg Spain and its Catholic allies in the western Mediterranean), it’s vital importance was psychological. It sank the perception of Ottoman dominance and the inevitability of Islam’s westward encroachment beyond the Balkans. Includes 20 color illustrations.

With over 200 ships per side, it was the largest naval battle in sixteen centuries and the last major fight between fleets composed entirely of the muscle-driven galley. These slender ships were the direct descendants of the Classical trireme but carried cannon and marines bearing firearms, although massed archery and cold steel still played a major role on the fateful day.

DRAGOONS AND DRAGOON OPERATIONS IN THE BRITISH CIVIL WARS: 1638-1653

Covers the following areas: the origins and role of dragoons; combined arms tactics and specialist operations; organization and composition of dragoon units; pay and quarter; arms and ammunition; standards, equipment and clothing; horses, equine care, saddlery and fodder; the Oxford Army; the Earl of Essex’s Army; the Eastern Association Army; the New Model Army; and the role of dragoons in regional warfare.

Explores the concept of raising, equipping, composition, organization, and operational role of dragoons during the British Civil Wars. It also provides information about known dragoon units and their activities, across a relatively broad geographical and chronological range, and challenges previous interpretations in the light of more recent research.

These soldiers were an essential part of 17th-century armies, even if some contemporaries reflected uncertainties about their precise function. Arguably, as part of the wider context of ‘military revolution’ in the tactics and prosecution of war in Europe, during the Thirty Years’ War in particular, the medium harquebusiers and mounted infantry continued to evolve. Although dragoons occasionally delivered mounted charges, their distinctive character dictated that they were employed in operations where mobility was essential – the seizing of bridges and strongholds, raiding, reconnaissance, patrolling and foraging. Dragoons were also used for defending hedges and passes, specialist siege operations, and in providing covering fire for both the horse of foot.

TIME OF WARS: Eastern Europe 1590 – 1660 (Wargame)

Minor states are also present – Denmark, Brandenburg, Moldova, Wallachia, Transylvania and Crimean Khanate. They can be a battleground of strong rivalry between players or source of internal problems. Includes five scenarios. The main scenario is for five players, but four shorter scenarios are for two or three players. Playing time: from 4 to 8 hours.

Contents: One mounted board (68 x 48 cm); five decks of cards – every deck contains 50 cards; one deck of Rulers’ cards – 23 cards; five Superpowers’ Sheets; 242 die-cut counters in size of 15x15mm; 104 die-cut counters in size of 30×15 mm; 308 die-cut counters in size of 12.5×12.5 mm; 23 wooden holders; one set of sticky labels; one rule book (20 pages); one scenario book (12 pages); one Space – Religion chart; and two 6-sided dice.

The heart of the game are five decks of cards – one for each superpower with interaction between players. Every time a player uses a particular card he must make a tough decision – play the card as operational points or as event. The background of the choice is need of growth of his own state or weakening his opponent’s position.

The period was rich in famous characters (rulers and commanders) and critical events – for example the Time of Troubles in the Tsardom, the Thirty Years War in the Reich, Swedish Deluge in the Commonwealth. All these and much more are smoothly incorporated during gameplay.

HOW THE WEST WAS SAVED: The Russo-Polish War 1920 (Wargame)

The game covers the period from April 1920, when the Poles were poised to attack Kiev, until October 1920 when the War effectively came to an end. One player commands the Polish and Ukrainian armies and the other commands the Russians (and their Lithuanian allies if Lithuania joins the conflict). Generally, each counter denotes a cavalry or infantry division or an artillery train, but some smaller brigades and regiments are also represented.

Simple rules center upon Resource Points, reflecting the changing capabilities of each side to wage war at different stages during the conflict. Resource Points can also be affected by extraneous factors determined by die rolls and Random Event Cards. This uncertainty regarding the resources available goes some way towards recreating the chaos and fog of war which beset operational planning, and compounds the challenging logistical problems of conducting war over such a large area. As lines of communication lengthen, they become vulnerable and limit strategic options.

This uncertainty continues when it comes to putting plans into action. Players take in turns to place Activation Markers on those units they wish to move. In this way they reveal their intentions (or are they bluffing?): is my opponent trying to thwart my plans or does he intend to unleash an offensive of his own? The tension is increased still further because orders to move may not be received or carried out, sometimes resulting in battles which neither side anticipated or intended.

Combat is resolved by comparing the Combat Factors of each side, as modified by terrain, die roll and, sometimes, by Random Event Cards. Unusually for a strategic game, unit facing is also important. This is because the Russo-Polish War was one of maneuver fought over huge distances with relatively small armies. As a consequence, even though both sides were well equipped for defence — possessing artillery, barbed wire and machine guns — a combination of vast open spaces and rudimentary reconnaissance meant that, unlike on the crowded battlefields of WWI, defensive positions could often be outflanked and overrun before reinforcements arrive.

Contents: 16-page Rulebook; Set Up Card; Two Six-sided Dice (one Red, One White); mounted 48 x 68 cm map showing territories between Warsaw and Smolensk; 216 unit counters and game markers; and 40 laminated Random Event Cards. Playing time: 4 to 8 hours.

THE BATTLE OF PLASSEY 1757: The Victory That Won an Empire

As Britain’s influence increased through its official trading arm, the East India Company, the ruler of Bengal, Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah, sought to drive the British out of the sub-continent and turned to France for help. The ensuing conflict saw campaigns fought by captains and occasionally colonels and by small companies rather than big armies.

The fighting culminated in Robert Clive’s astonishing victory at Plassey where just 3,000 British and sepoy troops defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah’s Franco-Bengali army of 18,000 in the space of only 40 minutes. The victory at Plassey in 1757 established Britain as the dominant force in India, the whole of which gradually come under British control and became the most prized possession in its empire. Few battles in history have ever had such profound consequences.

The campaigns created heroes, cowards, and rogues on the make. The story is not only about Robert Clive, a clerk from Shropshire who became to all intents and purposes an emperor, but also about Eyre Coote an Irishman who fought with everyone he met, about Alexander Grant a Jacobite who first escaped from Culloden and then, Flashman-like was literally the last man into the last boat to escape Calcutta and the infamous Black Hole.

1806-1807: TSAR ALEXANDER’S SECOND WAR WITH NAPOLEON

The Russian official history of the second war between Emperor Alexander and Napoleon, in 1806 and 1807, using original military and diplomatic documents and the testimonies of witnesses and participants from the war.

First published in 1846, the history considers the reasons for the war undertaken by Emperor Alexander in alliance with Prussia, the disaster that befell Prussia at Jena and Auerstedt, and Alexander’s mobilization when, after the destruction of the Prussians, Napoleon moved to the borders of Russia.

Following Napoleon’s crossing to the right bank of the Vistula, the narrative describes the subsequent Russian military operations against Napoleon in both the winter and spring campaigns. The winter campaign culminated with the Battle of Eylau, with consideration to the exhaustion of the fighting armies, frosts, impassable roads, and political factors that stopped the bloodshed in the main theater of war until May.

The narrative then considers the inactivity of the armies, and exhaustion of all possible resources in anticipation of the spring campaign, before concluding with Napoleon’s repulse at Heilsberg, the Russian defeat at Freidland, retreat to the right bank of the Neman, and peace at Tilsit.

THE GALACIAN DIVISION 1943-45: Ukrainian Volunteers and Conscripts in the Waffen SS

Debunks many of the myths surrounding the Galician Division and provides an objective appraisal of the volunteers and conscripts who, to this day, are both lauded as heroes and vilified as criminals in the media and academic circles. Now, in the context of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine under the pretext of ‘denazification’, it is more critical than ever to uncover the truth of this country’s wartime relationship with Nazi Germany.

Ever since its disbandment in May 1945, the memory of the Galician Division, a Ukrainian Waffen SS formation, has been dogged by unsubstantiated claims of war crimes and spurious media attacks. But what were the circumstances in 1943 that led thousands of Ukrainians to volunteer to fight in Hitler’s crusade against Bolshevism?

Why, the following year, did coercion replace incentives as a means of recruitment? Did, as has been claimed, Ukrainian soldiers adopt the German doctrine of ‘absolute destruction’ in occupied zones? And why, in recent years, have Ukrainian nationalists chosen to fly the flag of the Galician Division at rallies and football matches?

IMMIGRANT WARRIOR: A Challenging Life in War and Peace

Henrik Lunde grew up in Norway and came to the United States with his parents as a teenager. After completing high school, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1958 as the Honor Graduate in the History Department.
